We all want our puppy to grow up to be a wonderfully behaved dog.
Just like people – nobody is perfect. However, there are some great people out there, and there are also some really great dogs.
Now before you start with the training and take him off to puppy school – think about what you really want from this little boisterous bundle of joy as an adult.
How should your puppy behave when he grows up?
Doing high-fives, roly-polies and the commando crawl is amusing however, think about the social aspects of your future dog’s behaviour.
Do you really want a performing tricks dog or a well-behaved socialised dog when around people and other dogs?
Do you really want to have to warn your visitors to:
-
-
- stay away from the dog when he’s eating,
- don’t pat him near his head,
- don’t touch his toys,
- keep the children away as he will knock them over,
- don’t bring your dog over as he might bite it,
- don’t touch his tail,
- plenty more ………………….
-
Puppy classes spend much time and effort focusing on how to do commands such as sit and stay and pay little attention to the really important stuff. This is the stuff that should be addressed early and cannot be left to later when the problems surface.
Most dog trainers will focus on the sit, the down and the stay! NO dog has been euthanized because they didn’t do a proper sit or because they had a poor stay.
Bad behavior
How about aggression to children, owners, strangers? This is the serious one. More dogs are put to sleep for aggression, barking, growling, and challenging than any other reason.
There is nothing more dangerous than an out of control dog, pulling you along on the leash, ignoring you when you let them off. How about road and car sense? There is a very real danger for the dog itself around cars and other dogs.
Very few dog trainers show you how to prevent all of this, because very few actually understand it themselves!
The perfect dog?
What do most people think about the desired behavior for a perfect dog?
In no particular order, the 5 important behaviors include:
-
-
- Calm around all other animals including dogs
- Friendly to all people including children
- Relaxed and obedient around the home
- Coming straight away when called at the park
- Easy to walk with on the leash in public
-
